Beyond Home

I’ve never wanted to experience the world from a distance.

These photographs follow my travels—across islands, ancient cities, mountain roads, crowded streets, quiet villages, and places that once existed only as names on a map. I’ve stood beneath Japanese neon, wandered through England and Scotland, crossed the mountains of Austria and Switzerland, explored Central America, walked through history in Germany and Greece, and found beauty in places entirely different from home.

Every country gave me something: a story, a friendship, a lesson, a different way of seeing the world—or a different way of seeing myself.

This gallery holds pieces of that journey, in the order it unfolded:

Bahamas · Japan · England · Scotland · Austria · Switzerland · Slovakia · Nicaragua · Costa Rica · El Salvador · Honduras · Guatemala · Germany · Greece · Netherlands

I’ve been fortunate enough to see a good bit of the world.

And if you’re wondering how someone who felt like a “slave” could still travel so far and wide, that question is worth asking.

Control does not always look like locked doors.

I was allowed to travel—but not always free to choose who I was. I could cross oceans while still living within strict boundaries of belief, behavior, identity, and belonging. Some of these trips were connected to religious service. Others offered rare glimpses of a much larger world.

That is one of the contradictions at the heart of Good Slave: my life could look adventurous from the outside while feeling confined from within.

I had a passport.

Freedom took longer.

And I’m nowhere near finished. 🌎✈️
